Sustainable Farming

Agriculture is the backbone of Uganda’s economy. More than 85% of the total population depends on agriculture as their main source of livelihood.

With Uganda’s unemployment rates, poverty levels rising and the community dealing with limited access to land, In an effort to identify successful we have found that farming in bags (“sack farming”) is very helpful to the women and important agricultural producers throughout the developing world. In some places, they are likely to be the primary farmers, whether in households that they head themselves or with a husband or partner.

In other places, women play a key supporting role in agriculture, growing crops and livestock for household food consumption and nutrition for everyone and, selling small surpluses to provide income for families.

The practices that are taught at H4CA include:

  • Agriculture Techniques

  • Social Empowerment

  • Small scale Business Training

Our farming program targets farmers within the context of their households and communities. While we emphasize reaching them we do not isolate these activities and instead embed them in broader programs that encourage them economic empowerment within their households and communities.

We are focused on growing leafy green and fruit vegetables in our garden, as they allow for several harvest times for a single plant.
